In almost two years of my learning English journey, I still remember reading English books that taught me a lot of useful vocabulary that I still use today.

If you are looking for books that are easy to understand and can teach you essential words you need to know to speak English fluently, then you’re in the right place. After reading these books I recommend, you will expand your vocabulary, improve your English, and enjoy the stories!

Even though if you're in advanced level, these books will teach you some grammar, phrases, and vocabulary you don't know, and what's more? These are popular "must-read" classic novels!

1. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer:

Published in 1876 by Mark Twain. This book narrates the story of a naughty boy named Tom Sawyer who lives with his Aunt Polly in the town of St Petersburg. Tom and his friend witness a crime at the graveyard, they run away from their homes to become pirates, and they also find the treasure!

This is my favorite book of all time, and I've read it twice. I wish I could read this book for the very first time again. Reading this taught me important words and improved my comprehension of English. One of the words that I learned which I still remember is “snigger” which means to laugh disrespectfully at someone.

This book is the best for beginners of English. You will be motivated by understanding the story and learning so many new words.

2. The Secret Seven series

While the primary focus of this post is book recommendations, I'll throw in a bonus recommendation of an entire series of thrilling, adventurous, and exciting books that will keep you engaged for days and help you improve your English!

The Secret Seven is a children's book series by popular children's author Enid Blyton. The book is the story of seven friends who are members of a secret society. The series is the narration of their exciting adventures while solving mysteries together.

These books will help you improve both your vocabulary and your English-speaking skills through the use of everyday language and standard British expressions by the characters. The plot of these books takes place in England, so you'll also learn about British culture.

3. The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden novel was written by Frances Hodgson and published in 1911. After the death of her parents in India from cholera, the protagonist of this classic story, Mary Lennox, is sent to live with her uncle in the Yorkshire moors of England. Mary, who had previously been miserable and spoilt.

She found a hidden garden in her uncle’s home, but it was locked. With the assistance of the boy and his cousin, she entered the garden. The garden served as a place of emotional healing for Mary, the boy Dickon, and her cousin.

This book has been a favorite of readers for a long time, and it has lessons about friendship.

Furthermore, the author narrates the story in simple language, which makes it easy for beginner and intermediate learners to understand. Reading this book will enhance your comprehension skills and teach you a lot of new words and expressions.

4. Treasure Island

A young boy named Jim Hawkins embarks on a journey to find a treasure with his crew. Because he got the map of the treasure from a pirate who arrived at his inn one day. The enemies of the pirate attacked the inn and killed the pirate to obtain the map, but Jim ran away with his mother and the map and later set out for the island where the treasure is hidden.

On the ship, Jim finds out that Long John Silver is planning to kill the Jim Hawkins crew and steal the treasure. Among the crew, some are loyal to the captain, and some are loyal to Long John Silver.

When they reach the island where the treasure is buried, how are Jim Hawking and his friends going to fight the pirates and get the treasure?

Reading this exciting and suspenseful story written by Robert Louis Stevenson and the simple language will immerse you in the book. This book is suitable for intermediate learners, but no worries even if you are a beginner. You will understand the story. Remember to not try to understand every single word. You just have to understand the story.

5. The Great Expectations

Set in Victorian London. The book tells the story of an orphan named Pip's life from childhood to adulthood.

His meeting with an escaped convict, his dream of becoming a gentleman to win Estella's love, and some other surprises in his life.

Written by the famous author of the 19th century Charles Dickens. This classic novel has been read for generations.

Although this book could be challenging for some learners. But overall, it is a must-read book. This book will teach you many lessons as well as English.

Here’s one tip: don’t write down every new word you come across. Only note down those words which you have encountered so many times that you recognize the word.
